Orbz balloons are some of our most favorite mylar balloon. They provide huge impact and look stunning. Typically used in balloon garlands, balloon column toppers, or suspended around a room. They can be inflated with air or helium and have a self-sealing valve. Cannot be fully inflated with a straw and breath alone. The balloon needs to stretch to form and requires more power from an electric inflator, balloon hand pump or helium regulator. If inflating with helium, it requires the latex valve to be used. The latex valve will provide enough force to fully inflate the balloon. Please note that during inflation, it may make a popping or cracking sound as it expands. This is from the seams seperating and should not alarm you that the balloon may be popping. Fully inflate until all the wrinkles are gone and the balloon is perfectly round.

I take great care inflating this 32" Silver balloon.

    Rating

These balloons have an excellent ratio of internal volume to weight, suitable for flying. If one wants to inflate the balloon very quickly, they just put the pressure to the balloon and it opens with a few loud "Snaps". I believe this method of inflation although very quick is not good for the seams or gores on the balloon. I believe this puts excessive stress on the balloon structure. I fly these balloons with lifting gas, so I want them to last as long as possible without failing. My method of inflation is to partially fill the balloon with some air first , stretch the balloon till it's diameter of 32" and then remove the air and put in lifting gas. I first put some air in the balloon till it partially inflates. I then try to open the seams where they are doubled up on the fill valve side of the balloon. This is carefully done by hand, carefully separating the seams or gores a bit at a time. After the fill valve side of the balloon is free I add some more air pressure till there is some force on the seams opposite the fill valve. If one were to add the pressure too quickly there would be a loud popping sound as the seams separated. I carefully separate the seams or gores on the side opposite the fill valve which sometimes is a bit more difficult and sometimes more air pressure is added to slowly separate the seams with out causing too much stress. Once the seams start to separate sometimes you can get your finger under the seam and carefully help the seam to open by lifting up with your finger. Now if you are just using this balloon for decoration at your party as a silver shiny ball, I believe none of this careful inflation method of the balloon is required, as the balloon only has to last a few days.

An Off Label Science application for this 32" Balloon

    Rating

When properly prepared this balloon has been known to go around the world a few times transmitting it's location, altitude, ground speed, voltage and temperature. The preparation of the balloon involves slowly filling the balloon in a high humidity environment to about .3psi, till the 32" diameter is achieved and there are still a few wrinkles visible on the gores. The image shows the balloon at launch only partly inflated with 5 grams of free lift. The balloon stretches to it's full diameter at float level of about 13.5km above sea level. The valve interior surface was cleared of paint with thinner. The valve was heat sealed after filling. The payload including radio solar cells and antenna weighed about 8 grams. With the pyramid shaped 3 sided solar cell shape, the balloon was able to transmit from sunrise to sunset.
